Relaxed Rules Allow more City Farmers Markets

There has been a growth in farmers' markets throughout the city. We currently have 65 markets and the city will encourage even more. The City Council approved changes last week.

The changes that were approved have been updated to reflect the markets' popularity. They new changes eliminate the farmers' market licensing fee, simplify the rules for operating a market and require a simplified registration with the Phila Dept of Public Health.

As the markets popularity increase, the City and the Dept of Health recognize the need for fresh, healthy, affordable, local food. These markets will serve a neighborhood hubs for fresh, local food while stimulating the local economy.

In the past there was a $300 annual licensing fee to run a farmer's market. Now to operate a local market the owner will register with the Dept of Public Health.
